Reader Top Ten Greatest Science Fiction Film Endings: David Fullam

Reader David Fullam starts off our reader top ten list this Sunday morning.  Results for the ten greatest science fiction film endings will be posted this afternoon!

David writes:

"1. 2001-A Space Odyssey.
What Science Fiction could be, and maybe should be. A Paraphysical conclusion leaving us to fill in the blanks. Brave move on the part of Kubrick and Clarke.
2. Planet of the Apes.
Still the classic twist ending, all twist film endings bow down to. Imitated, never duplicated.
3. Space Runaway-Be Invoked.
The Ideon and the Gando Rowa go up in the biggest explosion since the Big Bang, the Human Race and the Buff Clan are both wiped out, much of the Milky Way is destroyed and the Ide is cleansed. But from all this death, comes rebirth, and the hope that we will get it right the next time.
4. Things to Come.
All the Universe or nothing, which shall it be? Wells' did not live to see how stagnant and crude we would become. But at the time of writing, it looked like there was nothing we could not accomplish. If only it were so.

5. The Day the Earth Stood Still (original)
The choice is given to us by the Cosmic Christ, peace or destruction?
6. The Incredible Shrinking man.
To God, there is no zero. I still exist. GOD BLESS RICHARD MATHESON!!!
7. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
THE fist pumping, hell yeah ending of all Science Fiction movie endings. You will be whooping like the Apes at the conclusion of this revolution.
8. Star Trek 2-The Wrath of Khan.
Still heartbreaking after all these years. Had the series ended here, it would have gone out in fine style.
9. The Empire Strikes Back.
The heroes are defeated and Luke has to grapple with a certain revelation. The best big screen cliffhanger ever.
10. The Thing From Another World.
Arguably the most famous line in Science Fiction film history.
Runners up.
Colossus-The Forbin Project.
This is the voice of World Control. Meet your new master Planet Earth.

Superman.
A nod and a smile from the greatest hero ever.
THEM.
If the first atom bomb tests mutated the ants, what about all the test afterwards? The floodgates are opened for the atomic monster movies to come.
Revenge of the Sith.
For one brief moment on Tatooine, Lucas almost redeems the otherwise horrid prequel films.
Demon Seed.

I'm alive!"

David: When I presented my own  list last Monday, I was really certain about my ten choices.  But your list, as well as those of many other readers, makes me realize how many more titles I might have considered.  Mentions here of Colossus, Them, Things to Come, and Demon Seed all strike a powerful chord.

  1. Actually I found this one easier to do than the Top Ten SF Movies. Difficult to pick favorites or bests, but this one was fun!
